Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 The perspicuous Book is witness 2 We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night indeed it is We Who warn. 3 In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, 4 By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, 6 He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, 7 La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. 10 Which would envelope mankind. That would be a grievous affliction. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the punishment; surely we are believers. 12 How is it possible for them to accept guidance, whereas a Noble Messenger who speaks clearly has already come to them? 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "He is a madman, taught by others!" 14 We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. 15 The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. 16 ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them 17 saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. 18 Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. 19 “And I take the refuge of my Lord and yours, against your stoning me.” 20 And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. 21 (But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)." 22 God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. 23 And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' 24 How much they left behind of gardens and springs 25 And crops and noble sites 26 And pleasant things wherein they took delight! 27 Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. 28 And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
