Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By the clear Book, 2 We sent it down during a Blessed Night: for We (ever) wish to warn (against Evil). 3 On this night, every absolute command coming from Us becomes distinguishable. 4 A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), 5 As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); 6 Lord of the heavens and earth, and all that between them is if you have faith. 7 There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. 8 Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. 9 WAIT, THEN, for the Day when the skies shall bring forth a pall of smoke which will make obvious [the approach of the Last Hour,] 10 Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the torment, verily we shall become believers. 12 How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] 15 On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution. 16 ۞ And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble apostle, 17 [Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allah. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger," 18 And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” 19 and, behold, it is with my Sustainer - and your Sustainer - that I seek refuge against all your endeavours to revile me. 20 If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." 21 Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” 22 "Journey by night with My devotees," (it was said); "you will certainly be pursued. 23 And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 corn-fields, gracious mansions, 26 And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! 27 Even so; and We caused to inherit them another people. 28 And neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite (again). 29
