Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, 2 Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. 3 On that [night] was made clear, in wisdom, the distinction between all things [good and evil] 4 at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] 5 As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 But they are in doubt, amusing themselves. 9 Watch for the Day when the heaven will bring clear smoke, 10 engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. 11 'Our Lord, remove this punishment from us, we are believers' 12 How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, 13 But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." 14 Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. 15 On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution. 16 ۞ We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them, 17 Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 18 and, 'Rise not up against God; behold, I come to you with a clear authority, 19 And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: 20 "But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone." 21 Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” 24 How many of the gardens and fountains have they left! 25 And green crops (fields etc.) and goodly places, 26 And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight! 27 Thus (it was), and We gave them as a heritage to another people. 28 So the heavens and the earth did not weep for them, and they were not given respite. 29
