Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim! 1 By the luminious Book. 2 Verily We have sent it down on a blessed night, verily We were to become warners. 3 Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom 4 As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: 5 as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 There is no god except He. He revives and causes to die. (He is) your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 Nay, but they play in doubt. 9 Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible, 10 Covering the people; this is a painful torment. 11 Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." 12 How is it possible for them to accept guidance, whereas a Noble Messenger who speaks clearly has already come to them? 13 Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" 14 Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. 15 On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. 16 ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): 17 "Deliver the creatures of God to me. I am the trusted messenger sent to you. 18 And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. 19 I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. 20 If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." 21 Then he supplicated to his Lord saying: 'These are sinful people' 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 Cross the sea by cutting a path through it. Pharaoh's army will be drowned. 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 And crops and noble sites 26 And the delights which they had been enjoying! 27 Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. 29
