Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
HaMeem 1 By the luminious Book. 2 that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. 3 On that [night] was made clear, in wisdom, the distinction between all things [good and evil] 4 By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), 5 A mercy from your Lord. Verily He is all-hearing and all-knowing, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. – 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. 11 [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." 12 But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them 13 yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” 14 If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). 15 On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. 16 ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] 17 [Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allah. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger," 18 "And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest. 19 “And I take the refuge of my Lord and yours, against your stoning me.” 20 But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone." 21 But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" 22 (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. 23 And leave the sea intervening; surely they are a host that shall be drowned. 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 And cornfields and goodly positions. 26 and the life of ease in which they took delight! 27 Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; 28 The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. 29
