Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! 2 Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning - 3 In it every wise matter is determined 4 As commands from Us. It is indeed We who send (messengers), 5 in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, 6 He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would have strong faith. 7 La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. 8 Yet they are in doubt, playing. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. 11 [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." 12 But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." 14 Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. 15 The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. 16 ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, 17 (and said): “Deliver to me Allah's servants. I am a trustworthy Messenger to you, 18 And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: 19 I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. 20 But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone." 21 Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." 22 (His Lord answered): 'Set out with My worshipers in the night, for you will surely be followed. 23 Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." 24 They left - how many! of gardens and springs. 25 And cornfields and goodly positions. 26 And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 And neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite (again). 29
