Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 therein every wise bidding 4 by Our own command -- We have been sending messages, 5 as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. 7 There is no worship except for Him – He gives life and causes death; your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 Yet they play about in doubt. 9 But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke 10 enveloping all mankind, [and causing the sinners to exclaim:] "Grievous is this suffering! 11 Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us – we now accept faith.” 12 How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, 13 then they turned away from him and said, 'A man tutored, possessed!' 14 If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). 15 However, We shall truly take Our revenge on the day when the great seizure takes place. 16 ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], 17 saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, 18 And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. 19 and, behold, it is with my Sustainer - and your Sustainer - that I seek refuge against all your endeavours to revile me. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 He therefore prayed to his Lord, “These are a guilty nation!” 22 (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 And corn-fields and noble buildings, 26 And comfort wherein they were amused. 27 As such (it was). And We made other people inherit them. 28 So the heavens and the earth did not weep for them, and they were not given respite. 29
