Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
HA MIM. 1 By the Clear Book 2 Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning - 3 Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom 4 By a command from Us – indeed it is We Who send. 5 (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 WAIT, THEN, for the Day when the skies shall bring forth a pall of smoke which will make obvious [the approach of the Last Hour,] 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful punishment. 11 O our Sustainer, relieve us of suffering, for, verily, we [now] believe [in Thee]!" 12 How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger. 13 Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" 14 Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). 15 The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. 16 ۞ And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger, 17 Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. 18 Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. 19 and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. 20 And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. 21 Then he called upon his Lord: these are a people guilty. 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” 24 [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, 25 And corn-fields and noble buildings, 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! 28 Neither did the heavens weep for them, nor the earth, nor were they granted respite. 29
