Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. 1 By the clear Book, 2 surely We sent it down on a blessed night, We have always sent warnings, 3 On which all affairs are sorted out and decided 4 Amran (i.e. a Command or this Quran or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers), 5 in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. 7 La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. 8 Rather they are in doubt, playing. 9 WAIT, THEN, for the Day when the skies shall bring forth a pall of smoke which will make obvious [the approach of the Last Hour,] 10 Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. 11 Lord, remove this torment from us for we are believers". 12 How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, 13 yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” 14 Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. 15 The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. 16 ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them 17 saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. 18 And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. 19 And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me. 20 And if ye will not believe in me, then let me alone. 21 He therefore prayed to his Lord, “These are a guilty nation!” 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host. 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 And cornfields and noble places! 26 And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight! 27 Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. 28 The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. 29
