Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha. Mim. 1 By the Book that makes things clear; 2 that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. 3 In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, 4 By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), 5 As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. 7 There is only One Lord. It is He who gives life and causes things to die. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 Yet they are in doubt, playing. 9 Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible, 10 That shall overtake men; this is a painful punishment. 11 Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us – we now accept faith.” 12 How should they have the Reminder, seeing a clear Messenger already came to them, 13 Whereas they had then turned away from him and said, “He is a madman, tutored!”? 14 We now remove the punishment for some days – so you will again commit the same. 15 One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! 16 ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. 17 saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. 18 Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. 19 and, behold, it is with my Sustainer - and your Sustainer - that I seek refuge against all your endeavours to revile me. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" 22 So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. 23 Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." 24 [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, 25 And the cornlands and the goodly sites 26 And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! 27 Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited; 29
