Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 By the Book that makes things clear, 2 Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. 3 On which all affairs are sorted out and decided 4 As commands from Us. It is indeed We who send (messengers), 5 as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) 6 the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between them: if you would only have sure faith. 7 There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 yet, they toy with their doubts. 9 So watch for the Day when the sky will come down with a pall of smoke, 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the punishment; surely we are believers. 12 How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 We now remove the punishment for some days – so you will again commit the same. 15 On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. 16 ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], 17 "Send the servants of God with me. I am a trustworthy Messenger sent to you. 18 Do not consider yourselves above God. I shall show you a manifest authority (in support of my truthfulness). 19 I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. 20 "But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone." 21 And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. 22 (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 corn-fields, gracious mansions, 26 and pleasant things in which they delighted! 27 Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. 28 And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
