Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Ha. Mim. 1 By the Clear Book 2 Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. 3 Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom 4 at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] 5 as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing. 6 the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between them: if you would only have sure faith. 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 Yet they are in doubt, playing. 9 But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. 11 Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us we now accept faith.” 12 But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them 13 then they turned away from him and said, 'A man tutored, possessed!' 14 [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] 15 The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. 16 ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, 17 (and said): “Deliver to me Allah's servants. I am a trustworthy Messenger to you, 18 And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: 19 And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. 20 But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” 21 Then he supplicated to his Lord saying: 'These are sinful people' 22 Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, 23 And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." 24 How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind, 25 And cornfields and noble places! 26 and what prosperity they had rejoiced in! 27 Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. 28 and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. 29
