Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, 2 surely We sent it down on a blessed night, We have always sent warnings, 3 On which all affairs are sorted out and decided 4 The command that We have been sending 5 (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, if you really do believe. 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and makes to die; your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 Yet they are in doubt, playing. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. 11 (They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!" 12 [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, 13 Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" 14 We are removing the punishment a little, but you revert. 15 The day when We will seize with the greatest seizure We will indeed take revenge. 16 ۞ And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger, 17 Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. 18 "And exalt not (yourselves) against Allah. Truly, I have come to you with a manifest authority. 19 I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. 20 If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." 21 Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. 22 So go forth with My servants by night; surely you will be pursued: 23 And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." 24 How many of gardens and springs do they [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people] left. 25 And crops and noble sites 26 and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! 27 Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! 28 Neither did the heavens weep for them, nor the earth, nor were they granted respite. 29
