Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha Mim 1 By the Clear Book 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, 4 [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] 5 in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, 6 the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between them: if you would only have sure faith. 7 There is no worship except for Him He gives life and causes death; your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 Rather they are in doubt, playing. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. 11 O our Sustainer, relieve us of suffering, for, verily, we [now] believe [in Thee]!" 12 How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- 13 Then they had turned away from him (Messenger Muhammad SAW) and said: "One (Muhammad SAW) taught (by a human being), a madman!" 14 We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. 15 on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! 16 ۞ We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them, 17 saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. 18 And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: 19 and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. 20 And if you do not believe me, [at least] stand away from me!" 21 Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". 22 (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued. 23 And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 And fields and stately mansions, 26 and good things in which they took delight. 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. 29
