Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
HA MIM. 1 By the Clear Book 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. 4 Amran (i.e. a Command or this Quran or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers), 5 A Mercy from your Lord, He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. 7 There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Rather they are in doubt, playing. 9 So watch for the day when the sky begins to emit clear smoke, 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. 11 Lord, remove this torment from us for we are believers". 12 How can there be remembrance for them, when a messenger making plain (the Truth) had already come unto them, 13 but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' 14 [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] 15 Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. 16 ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], 17 Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. 18 "And exalt not yourselves against God: for, verily, I come unto you with a manifest authority [from Him]; 19 And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. 20 If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." 21 And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' 22 Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, 23 And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." 24 How much they left behind of gardens and springs 25 and cornfields and splendid buildings, 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 Even so; and We caused to inherit them another people. 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. 29
