Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Ha-Mim. 1 By the Book that makes things clear, 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 On that [night] was made clear, in wisdom, the distinction between all things [good and evil] 4 determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) 5 as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, 6 He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would have strong faith. 7 There is no worship except for Him – He gives life and causes death; your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 Aye! they're in doubt sporting. 9 Watch for the Day when the heaven will bring clear smoke, 10 enveloping people. That will be a grievous scourge. 11 (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” 12 But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. 15 The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. 16 ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], 17 saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. 18 "And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest. 19 And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. 20 And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. 21 Then he called to his Lord: "These are a sinful people." 22 [Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued. 23 (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," 24 How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains 25 And cornfields and noble places! 26 And the delights which they had been enjoying! 27 Thus (it was), and We gave them as a heritage to another people. 28 and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. 29
