Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha Mim. 1 CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! 2 surely We sent it down on a blessed night, We have always sent warnings, 3 Therein every wise affair is made distinct, 4 [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] 5 (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. 6 the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them - if you could but grasp it with inner certainty! 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 Yet they play about in doubt. 9 Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible, 10 Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. 11 Lord, remove this torment from us for we are believers". 12 [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). 15 The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. 16 ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): 17 Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. 18 Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. 19 And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. 20 “And if you do not believe in me, then have no relation with me.” 21 And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' 22 And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; 23 And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” 24 How many of the gardens and fountains have they left! 25 and sown fields and splendid mansions, 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. 28 So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. 29
