Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim. 1 By the Clear Book. 2 We sent it down during a Blessed Night: for We (ever) wish to warn (against Evil). 3 In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, 4 The command that We have been sending 5 in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and makes to die; your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 Nay, but they play in doubt. 9 But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" 12 How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." 14 If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). 15 However, We shall truly take Our revenge on the day when the great seizure takes place. 16 ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. 17 saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. 18 And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. 19 And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. 24 [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, 25 corn-fields, gracious mansions, 26 And pleasant things wherein they took delight! 27 Thus (it was), and We gave them as a heritage to another people. 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. 29
