Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
HA MIM. 1 I swear by the illustrious Book. 2 We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night indeed it is We Who warn. 3 Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. 4 As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: 5 As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Yet they play about in doubt. 9 Then wait you for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. 11 O our Sustainer, relieve us of suffering, for, verily, we [now] believe [in Thee]!" 12 How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, 13 Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" 14 We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. 15 But on that Day We will assault them most mightily, and then We shall revenge! 16 ۞ We tried Pharaoh's nation before them. A noble Messenger came to them, 17 "Send the servants of God with me. I am a trustworthy Messenger sent to you. 18 And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. 19 "And truly, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me (or call me a sorcerer or kill me). 20 If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." 21 Then he called to his Lord: "These are a sinful people." 22 (He was told): “Set out with My servants by night for you will certainly be pursued. 23 And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' 24 How much they left behind of gardens and springs 25 and fields of grain, and noble dwellings, 26 And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight! 27 Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; 28 Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. 29
