Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! 2 Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning - 3 Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. 4 A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, 6 He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, 7 There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Yet they play about in doubt. 9 But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." 12 But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, 13 then they turned away from him and said, 'A man tutored, possessed!' 14 Indeed, We will remove the torment for a little. Indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief]. 15 The day when We will seize with the greatest seizure We will indeed take revenge. 16 ۞ We tried Pharaoh's nation before them. A noble Messenger came to them, 17 Saying: Deliver to me the servants of Allah, surely I am a faithful apostle to you, 18 And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone." 21 And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," 24 How many of the gardens and fountains have they left! 25 And fields and grand palaces! 26 And comfort wherein they were amused. 27 Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. 28 Neither did the heavens weep for them, nor the earth, nor were they granted respite. 29
