Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
HA MIM. 1 By the clear Book, 2 We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night indeed it is We Who warn. 3 Therein every wise affair is made distinct, 4 As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: 5 A mercy from your Lord. Verily He is all-hearing and all-knowing, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. 7 There is no god except He. He revives and causes to die. (He is) your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 Nay, they are in doubt, they sport. 9 But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke 10 enveloping all mankind, [and causing the sinners to exclaim:] "Grievous is this suffering! 11 "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." 12 How can a warning benefit them? The Apostle who explained all things clearly had come to them, 13 yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” 14 Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. 15 on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! 16 ۞ We tried Pharaoh's nation before them. A noble Messenger came to them, 17 Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” 18 And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” 19 and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. 20 And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. 21 He therefore prayed to his Lord, “These are a guilty nation!” 22 (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. 23 And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host. 24 How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, 25 and fields of grain, and noble dwellings, 26 And the comfort they enjoyed. 27 Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. 28 Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, 29
