Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 therein every wise bidding 4 an order from Us. We are ever sending. 5 as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) 6 the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between them: if you would only have sure faith. 7 There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Yet they play about in doubt. 9 So watch for the Day when the sky will come down with a pall of smoke, 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful punishment. 11 'O our Lord, remove Thou from us the chastisement; we are believers.' 12 How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. 13 Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. 14 Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). 15 On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution. 16 ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] 17 Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” 18 "And exalt not yourselves against God: for, verily, I come unto you with a manifest authority [from Him]; 19 I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. 20 And if ye will not believe in me, then let me alone. 21 Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 They left - how many! of gardens and springs. 25 And fields and stately mansions, 26 and [all that] life of ease in which they used to delight! 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. 29
