Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Ha Mim. 1 By the luminious Book. 2 surely We sent it down on a blessed night, We have always sent warnings, 3 Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. 4 As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would have strong faith. 7 There is only One Lord. It is He who gives life and causes things to die. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. 9 So watch for the day when the sky begins to emit clear smoke, 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful punishment. 11 (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” 12 How is it possible for them to accept guidance, whereas a Noble Messenger who speaks clearly has already come to them? 13 and they turned away, saying, "He is a trained and insane person". 14 Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. 15 The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. 16 ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, 17 Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, 18 Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. 19 And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: 20 “And if you do not believe in me, then have no relation with me.” 21 (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." 22 And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; 23 Cross the sea by cutting a path through it. Pharaoh's army will be drowned. 24 They left how many gardens and fountains, 25 And cornfields and goodly positions. 26 and what prosperity they had rejoiced in! 27 Thus (it was), and We gave them as a heritage to another people. 28 And neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite (again). 29
