Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha-Mim. 1 I swear by the illustrious Book. 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom 4 As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - 5 As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); 6 Lord of the heavens and earth, and all that between them is if you have faith. 7 There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. 9 Watch for the Day when the heaven will bring clear smoke, 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. 11 "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." 12 How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger. 13 But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." 14 We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). 15 The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. 16 ۞ We tried Pharaoh's nation before them. A noble Messenger came to them, 17 Saying: "Restore to me the Servants of Allah: I am to you an messenger worthy of all trust; 18 And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. 19 I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me. 20 "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." 21 Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." 22 So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. 23 And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' 24 [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, 25 and sown fields, fine sitting places, 26 and pleasant things in which they delighted! 27 Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). 28 Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. 29
