The believers ask: 'Has a chapter been sent down' But when a clear chapter is sent down and fighting is mentioned in it, you see those in whose hearts is sickness looking towards you as one who swoons at death. 20 Obedience and good words. And when the matter [of fighting] was determined, if they had been true to Allah, it would have been better for them. 21 Then, is it to be expected of you, if ye were put in authority, that ye will do mischief in the land, and break your ties of kith and kin? 22 It is these whom Allah has cursed, so He made them deaf to the Truth and blinded their eyes. 23 Will they then not meditate on the Qur'an, or are there locks on the hearts? 24 Those who have turned back in their traces after the guidance has become clear to them, Satan it was that tempted them, and God respited them. 25 because they say to those who abhor what God has revealed, "We will obey you in some matters." God knows their secrets. 26 How then shall it be when the angels shall take them away at death smiting their faces and their backs! 27 because they followed the way that made God wrathful, and hated to adopt the way of His pleasure? So He made their actions come to nothing. 28
