The Mountain (Al-Toor)
49 verses, revealed in Mecca after Prostration (Al-Sajdah) before Kingship (Al-Mulk)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the Mount Sinai, 1 and the Book inscribed 2 on unrolled parchment, 3 By the House Frequented. 4 And by the roof raised high (i.e. the heaven). 5 By the sea overflowing. 6 VERILY, [O man,] the suffering decreed by thy Sustainer [for the sinners] will indeed come to pass: 7 There is none who could avert it. 8 [It will come to pass] on the Day when the skies will be convulsed in [a great] convulsion, 9 and the mountains will move with [an awesome] movement. 10 Will be the day of woe for those 11 Who are playing in falsehood. 12 On the Day whereon they will be pushed into Hell-Fire with a dreadful push. 13 "This is the Fire which you used to deny. 14 “So is this magic, or are you unable to see?” 15 Roast in it. Bear it with patience or impatience, it will be the same for you. You will be requited for what you had done." 16 Surely the godfearing shall be in gardens and bliss, 17 rejoicing in all that their Sustainer will have granted them: for their Sustainer will have warded off from them all suffering through the blazing fire. 18 [They will be told], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you used to do." 19 The God-fearing shall be reclining on couches facing each other, and We shall wed them to maidens with large, beautiful eyes. 20 And those who believe and whose families follow them in Faith,- to them shall We join their families: Nor shall We deprive them (of the fruit) of aught of their works: (Yet) is each individual in pledge for his deeds. 21 And We shall succour them with fruits and flesh such as they desire 22 There they shall pass from hand to hand a (wine) cup, free from any Laghw (dirty, false, evil vague talk between them), and free from sin (because it will be legal for them to drink). 23 ۞ And there will go round boy-servants of theirs, to serve them as if they were preserved pearls. 24 They will ask each other questions, 25 Saying: "We were also once full of fear at home. 26 “So Allah did us a great favour, and saved us from the punishment of the flame.” 27 "Truly, we did call unto Him from of old: truly it is He, the Beneficent, the Merciful!" 28
