The Mountain (Al-Toor)
49 verses, revealed in Mecca after Prostration (Al-Sajdah) before Kingship (Al-Mulk)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I CALL TO witness the Mount Sinai, 1 By a Decree inscribed 2 In parchment unrolled. 3 by the Visited House, 4 and the uplifted roof 5 By the sea overflowing. 6 VERILY, [O man,] the suffering decreed by thy Sustainer [for the sinners] will indeed come to pass: 7 there is no one who could avert it, 8 On the Day when the heaven will shake with a dreadful shaking, 9 And the mountains shall pass away passing away (altogether). 10 On that Day woe to those who belied 11 Who play in talk of grave matters; 12 That Day shall they be thrust down to the Fire of Hell, irresistibly. 13 and they will be told, "This is the fire which you called a lie. 14 Is this magic, or do you not see? 15 Endure the heat thereof, and whether ye are patient of it or impatient of it is all one for you. Ye are only being paid for what ye used to do. 16 As to the Righteous, they will be in Gardens, and in Happiness,- 17 Rejoicing in that which their Lord hath vouchsafed unto them; and their Lord will protect them from the torment of the Flame. 18 (It will be said): 'Eat and drink with a good appetite because of that which you did' 19 reclining on couches [of happiness] ranged in rows!" And [in that paradise] We shall mate them with companions pure, most beautiful of eye. 20 And (as for) those who believe and their offspring follow them in faith, We will unite with them their offspring and We will not diminish to them aught of their work; every man is responsible for what he shall have wrought. 21 We shall provide them with fruits and the meat of the kind which they desire. 22 They will pass cups of un-intoxicating and unsinful wine to one another. 23 ۞ Round about them will serve, (devoted) to them, young male servants (handsome) as Pearls well-guarded. 24 And they will approach one another, inquiring of each other. 25 They will say: "Aforetime, we were not without fear for the sake of our people. 26 So Allah conferred favor upon us and protected us from the punishment of the Scorching Fire. 27 Formerly we had always prayed to Him. Surely He is Most Benign, Most Compassionate.” 28
