The Mountain (Al-Toor)
49 verses, revealed in Mecca after Prostration (Al-Sajdah) before Kingship (Al-Mulk)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
CONSIDER Mount Sinai! 1 And the Book written 2 On an open record. 3 Consider the long-enduring house [of worship]! 4 And the elevated canopy 5 And by the sea kept filled (or it will be fire kindled on the Day of Resurrection). 6 surely, the punishment of your Lord is about to come, 7 none can avert that. 8 On the day when the heaven shall move from side to side 9 and the mountains shall violently fly about. 10 So woe on that day to those who reject (the truth), 11 Who play in talk of grave matters; 12 A day when they will be pushed, forcibly shoved towards the fire of hell. 13 This is the fire which you used to give the lie to. 14 Was it, then, a delusion or is it that you failed to see [its truth]? 15 Roast therein; endure it or endure it not, thereof it is equal unto you. Ye are only being requited for that which ye have been working. 16 The pious will live in bountiful Paradise, 17 rejoicing in that their Lord has given them; and their Lord shall guard them against the chastisement of Hell. 18 [They will be told], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you used to do." 19 They will recline (with ease) on thrones arranged in ranks. And We shall marry them to Houris (female, fair ones) with wide lovely eyes. 20 And those who accepted faith, and whose descendants followed them with faith We have joined their descendants with them, and have not reduced anything for them from their deeds; every soul is trapped in its own deeds. 21 And We will provide them with fruit and meat from whatever they desire. 22 There they will pass a goblet to one another with neither idle talk nor sin, 23 ۞ And there will go round boy-servants of theirs, to serve them as if they were preserved pearls. 24 And they [who are thus blest] will turn to one another, asking each other [about their past lives]. 25 They will say: “When we were living before among our kinsfolk we lived in constant fear (of Allah's displeasure). 26 Wherefore Allah hath obliged us, and hath protected us from the torment of the Scorch. 27 Verily we were wont to pray unto Him aforetime; verily He! it is He, the Benign, the Merciful. 28
