The Mountain (Al-Toor)
49 verses, revealed in Mecca after Prostration (Al-Sajdah) before Kingship (Al-Mulk)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I CALL TO witness the Mount Sinai, 1 And the Book written 2 On fine parchment unrolled, 3 By the much-frequented Fane; 4 And [by] the heaven raised high 5 And [by] the sea filled [with fire], 6 Verily, the Torment of your Lord will surely come to pass, 7 Of it there is no averter. 8 Upon the Day when the heaven spins dizzily 9 And the mountains will move away with a (horrible) movement. 10 On that Day woe to those who belied 11 such as play at plunging, 12 the day when they shall be pitched into the fire of Gehenna: 13 This is the fire which you used to deny. 14 Is this, then, any feat of magic or are you unable to see? 15 Endure the heat thereof, and whether ye are patient of it or impatient of it is all one for you. Ye are only being paid for what ye used to do. 16 Truly, the God-fearing will dwell [on that Day] in gardens and in bliss, 17 Rejoicing in that which their Lord hath vouchsafed unto them; and their Lord will protect them from the torment of the Flame. 18 [They will be told], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you used to do." 19 They will recline (with ease) on thrones arranged in ranks. And We shall marry them to Houris (female, fair ones) with wide lovely eyes. 20 We shall unite the believers with those descendants of theirs who followed them in their faith, and shall not deny them any part of the reward for their good deeds. Every person is pledged to what he did. 21 We shall give them fruits and meats, and what they desire. 22 while they pass therein a cup one to another wherein is no idle talk, no cause of sin, 23 ۞ And their boy servants shall go around them, as if they were pearls, safely hidden. 24 And some of them draw near to others, questioning. 25 Saying, “Indeed before this, we were in our houses, worried.” 26 “So Allah did us a great favour, and saved us from the punishment of the flame.” 27 Formerly we had always prayed to Him. Surely He is Most Benign, Most Compassionate.” 28
