The Mountain (Al-Toor)
49 verses, revealed in Mecca after Prostration (Al-Sajdah) before Kingship (Al-Mulk)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I swear by the Mountain, 1 By the book inscribed. 2 in an exposed parchment 3 By the much-frequented Fane; 4 and by the lofty vault of the sky, 5 Consider the surf-swollen sea! 6 surely, the punishment of your Lord is about to come, 7 There is none that can ward it off. 8 [It will come to pass] on the Day when the skies will be convulsed in [a great] convulsion, 9 And the mountains shall pass away passing away (altogether). 10 On that Day woe to those who belied 11 Those who sport entering into vain discourses. 12 The day on which they shall be driven away to the fire of hell with violence. 13 This is the Fire which you used to belie. 14 “So is this magic, or are you unable to see?” 15 Endure it [now]! But [whether you] bear yourselves with patience or without patience, it will be the same to you: you are but being requited for what you were wont to do." 16 Truly, the God-fearing will dwell [on that Day] in gardens and in bliss, 17 Rejoicing in that which their Lord hath vouchsafed unto them; and their Lord will protect them from the torment of the Flame. 18 "Eat and drink with relish," (they will be told), (as recompense) for what you had done." 19 reclining on couches arranged in rows. And We shall wed them to fair maidens with large beautiful eyes. 20 And they who believe and whose seed follow them in faith, We cause their seed to join them (there), and We deprive them of nought of their (life's) work. Every man is a pledge for that which he hath earned. 21 We shall give them fruits and meats, and what they desire. 22 In it, they accept cups from each other, in which is neither any lewdness nor any sin. 23 ۞ And there will go round boy-servants of theirs, to serve them as if they were preserved pearls. 24 And they [who are thus blest] will turn to one another, asking each other [about their past lives]. 25 They will say: "Aforetime, we were not without fear for the sake of our people. 26 So Allah conferred favor upon us and protected us from the punishment of the Scorching Fire. 27 Formerly we had always prayed to Him. Surely He is Most Benign, Most Compassionate.” 28
