EXHORT, then, [O Prophet, all men:] for, by thy Sustainer's grace, thou art neither a soothsayer nor a madman. 29 Do they say: "He is a poet for whom we expect an adverse turn of fortune?" 30 Say: 'Wait if you will; I shall be waiting with you' 31 Nay! do their understandings bid them this? Or are they an inordinate people? 32 Or do they say, "He has made it up"? Rather, they do not believe. 33 So let them bring a discourse like it, if they are truthful 34 Were they created out of nothing, or are they their own creators? 35 Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Nay, but they are sure of nothing! 36 Or do they have your Lord's treasures in their keeping? Or have absolute authority over them? 37 Or, do they have a ladder on which they listen? Then let any of them that has listened bring a clear authority. 38 Or has He (Allah) only daughters and you have sons? 39 Or do you demand any wages from them so that they are burdened with expense? 40 Or have they [knowledge of] the unseen, so they write [it] down? 41 Or do they want to stage a deception? -- Then only those who do not believe will be the ones who will be tricked. 42 Or do they have a God besides Allah? Purity is to Allah from their ascribing of partners to Him. 43 And if they were to see a fragment of the heaven falling, they would say: A heap of clouds. 44 Then leave them, till they encounter their day wherein they shall be thunderstruck, 45 and when their evil plans will be of no benefit to them nor will they be helped. 46 But, verily, for those who are bent on doing evil, there is suffering in store [even] closer at hand than that [supreme suffering in the hereafter]: but most of them are not aware of it. 47 And wait patiently for the judgment of your Lord, for surely you are before Our eyes, and sing the praise of your Lord when you rise; 48 And for part of the night also praise thou Him,- and at the retreat of the stars! 49
