The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the star when it plunges, 1 This fellow-man of yours has not gone astray, nor is he deluded, 2 Nor does he say (aught) of (his own) Desire. 3 It is not but a revelation revealed, 4 The Lord of Mighty Power has taught him, 5 Lord of power and wisdom. So he acquired poise and balance, 6 the strong one who appeared on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] approached and came closer, 8 So the distance between the Spectacle and the beloved was only two arms’ length, or even less. (The Heavenly Journey of Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him – was with body and soul.) 9 And He revealed to His servant what He revealed. 10 The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) 11 Will ye therefore dispute with him concerning that which he hath seen? 12 And certainly he saw him in another descent, 13 at the Lote Tree (Sidrat tree) of the ending 14 Close to which is the Everlasting Paradise. 15 When there comes to the Lote Tree, that which comes 16 The eye did not turn aside, nor did it exceed the limit. 17 He saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have you ever thought about al-Lat and al-Uzza, 19 And Manat the other third? 20 Is it for you the males and for Him the females? 21 that, lo and behold, is an unfair division! 22 These are only names given by yourselves and your fathers. God has not given them any authority. They, (unbelievers), only follow mere conjecture and the desires of their souls, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord. 23 Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after? 24 But it is to God that the Hereafter and this world belong. 25
