The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the star when it setteth. 1 your companion is neither astray, neither errs, 2 nor does he speak out of desire. 3 It is no less than inspiration sent down to him: 4 He was taught by one Mighty in Power, 5 by the great mighty one (Gabriel), 6 And he was on the horizon of the highest heaven. 7 Then he approached and came closer, 8 And was at a distance of two bows' length or (even) nearer, 9 then revealed to his servant that he revealed. 10 The heart lied not in that which he saw. 11 Will ye therefore dispute with him concerning that which he hath seen? 12 For indeed he saw him at a second descent, 13 By the lote-tree of the utmost boundary, 14 Close to which is the Everlasting Paradise. 15 (This was) when the lote-tree was covered with that which covered it. 16 (Muhammad's) eyes did not deceive him, nor did they lead him to falsehood. 17 For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest! 18 (Among the idols) have you considered allat and al'uzza, 19 as well as [in] Manat, the third and last [of this triad]? 20 Do sons belong to you and daughters to God? 21 Behold, such would be indeed a division most unfair! 22 These are nothing but names which ye have devised,- ye and your fathers,- for which Allah has sent down no authority (whatever). They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own souls desire!- Even though there has already come to them Guidance from their Lord! 23 Can the human being have whatever he wishes? 24 But unto Allah belongeth the after (life), and the former. 25
