The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
By the Star when it setteth, 1 Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred, 2 Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. 3 This is naught but a revelation revealed, 4 something that a very powerful one has imparted to him, 5 One of soundness. And he rose to [his] true form 6 the strong one who appeared on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then he approached and descended 8 until he was but two bow-lengths away, or even nearer. 9 When He revealed to His votary what He revealed. 10 The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) 11 What, will you dispute with him about what he sees! 12 He certainly saw him (Gabriel) during his other ascent 13 By the lote-tree of the utmost boundary, 14 near which is the Garden of Abode. 15 (This was) when the lote-tree was covered with that which covered it. 16 The eye did not turn aside, nor did it exceed the limit. 17 Indeed he saw the supreme signs of his Lord. 18 Have you then considered Al-Lat, and Al-'Uzza (two idols of the pagan Arabs). 19 And Manat, the third, the other? 20 What, have you males, and He females? 21 Behold, such would be indeed a division most unfair! 22 They are but names which you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord! 23 Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after? 24 But to Allah belongs the last (Hereafter) and the first (the world). 25
