The Stars (Al-Najm)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he misguided, 2 and neither does he speak out of his own desire: 3 This is only revelation communicated, 4 Bestowed on him by the Supreme Intellect, 5 One vigorous; and he grew clear to view 6 And he was on the horizon of the highest heaven. 7 Then he drew near, then he bowed 8 And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer; 9 And He revealed to His servant what He revealed. 10 The heart was not untrue in (making him see) what he saw. 11 What! do you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 And indeed he did see the Spectacle again. 13 Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. 14 near unto the garden of promise. 15 (This was) when the lote-tree was covered with that which covered it. 16 (His) sight never swerved, nor did it go wrong! 17 truly did he see some of the most profound of his Sustainer's symbols. 18 Have you then considered the Lat and the Uzza, 19 And Manat (another idol of the pagan Arabs), the other third? 20 What, have you males, and He females! 21 That indeed is a division unfair! 22 They are nothing but some names that you have coined, you and your forefathers – Allah has not sent any proof for them; they follow only guesses and their own desires; whereas the guidance from their Lord has come to them. 23 Or shall man have what he wishes? 24 So (know that) Allah only is the Owner of all – the Hereafter and this world. 25
