The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the star when it setteth. 1 Your companion did not err, nor did he go astray. 2 nor does he speak out of his desire. 3 This is nothing but a revelation that is conveyed to him, 4 The Lord of Mighty Power has taught him, 5 Of might, he (Gabriel) stood firm 6 While he was in the highest part of the horizon: 7 He (Gabriel) then came nearer and nearer. 8 Till he was (distant) two bows' length or even nearer, 9 So did (Allah) convey the inspiration to His Servant- (conveyed) what He (meant) to convey. 10 The heart was not untrue in (making him see) what he saw. 11 So will you dispute with him over what he saw? 12 And certainly he saw him descend a second time: 13 By the Lote-tree beyond which none can pass, 14 near unto the garden of promise. 15 when there covered the Lote-Tree that which covered; 16 The eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold. 17 Indeed he saw some of the greatest signs of His Lord. 18 (Among the idols) have you considered allat and al'uzza, 19 And subsequently the third, the Manat? 20 What, have you males, and He females! 21 That is indeed an unjust division. 22 These [allegedly divine beings] are nothing but empty names which you have invented - you and your forefathers - [and] for which God has bestowed no warrant from on high. They [who worship them] follow nothing but surmise and their own wishful thinking - although right guidance has now indeed come unto them from their Sustainer. 23 Or shall man have what he coveteth? 24 And to God belongs the First and the Last. 25
