The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I swear by the star when it goes down. 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he deluded; 2 Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. 3 It is naught but revelation that is revealed, 4 something that a very powerful one has imparted to him, 5 and endowed with wisdom; who in time manifested himself; 6 standing poised at the highest point on the horizon, 7 then he drew near, and became close 8 two bows' length away, or nearer, 9 And thus did [God] reveal unto His servant whatever He deemed right to reveal. 10 His heart did not falsify what he perceived. 11 Will you then argue with him about what he saw? 12 Indeed, he saw him in another descent 13 by the lote tree beyond which none may pass 14 nigh which is the Garden of the Refuge, 15 When that covered the lote-tree which did cover it! 16 his eye swerved not; nor swept astray. 17 Assuredly he beheld of the sign of his Lord, the greatest. 18 (Can anything as such be considered true) of al-Lat, al-Uzza, 19 And Manat, the third, the last? 20 What, have you males, and He females! 21 That is indeed an unjust division. 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath sent down no authority. They follow but their fancy, and that which pleaseth their souls; whereas assuredly there hath come unto them from their Lord the guidance. 23 Shall man have whatsoever he wisheth for! 24 And to God belongs the First and the Last. 25
