The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the setting star, 1 That your companion is not confused, nor has he gone astray, 2 And he speaketh not of his own desire. 3 This is nothing but a revelation that is conveyed to him, 4 He has been taught by the Extremely Powerful. 5 The Lord of Strength; so he attained completion, 6 And he is in the highest part of the horizon. 7 Then he drew near and hung above suspended, 8 until he was but two bow-lengths away, or even nearer. 9 Thus He revealed unto His bondman whatsoever He revealed. 10 The heart lied not in that which he saw. 11 Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he seeth? 12 He saw Him indeed another time 13 At the farthest lote-tree; 14 near which is Paradise. 15 when the lote tree was covered in mystic splendour. 16 [And withal,] the eye did not waver, nor yet did it stray: 17 for indeed he saw one of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have ye seen Lat. and 'Uzza, 19 and the third one, Manat? -- 20 What! for you the males and for Him the females! 21 That indeed is a division unfair! 22 They are but names which you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord! 23 Shall man have whatsoever he wisheth for! 24 Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 25
