The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the setting star, 1 Your companion does not err, nor does he go astray; 2 And he speaketh not of his own desire. 3 This is naught but a revelation revealed, 4 taught him by one terrible in power, 5 Endued with Wisdom: for he appeared (in stately form); 6 standing poised at the highest point on the horizon, 7 Then he approached and descended 8 Until a space of two bow (arcs) or even less remained, 9 And He revealed to His servant what He revealed. 10 The (Prophet's) heart lied not (in seeing) what he (Muhammad SAW) saw. 11 Will you then argue with him about what he saw? 12 For indeed he saw him at a second descent, 13 Near the Lote-tree beyond which none may pass: 14 close to the Garden of Refuge. 15 When the Lote-tree was covered over with what it was covered over; 16 The eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold. 17 Certainly he saw of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 So have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza? 19 And Manat the other third? 20 Is the male for you and for Him the female? 21 This is an unfair distinction! 22 They are naught but names which you have named, you and your fathers; Allah has not sent for them any authority. They follow naught but conjecture and the low desires which (their) souls incline to; and certainly the guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after? 24 And to God belongs the First and the Last. 25
