The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 Your companion does not err, nor does he go astray; 2 Neither does he speak of his own will. 3 This is only revelation communicated, 4 He was taught by [an angel] who is mighty in power, 5 Of might, he (Gabriel) stood firm 6 While he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] was in the highest part of the horizon, 7 then drew near and suspended hung, 8 So he was the measure of two bows or closer still. 9 He revealed to God's servant whatever he wanted. 10 His heart did not lie of what he saw. 11 Will ye therefore dispute with him concerning that which he hath seen? 12 And indeed he did see the Spectacle again. 13 to the Lot-tree (in the seven heavens) 14 Close to which is the Garden of Tranquility, 15 When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it]. 16 The sight [of the Prophet] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit]. 17 Certainly he saw of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have ye then considered Al-Lat and AL-'uzza: 19 And subsequently the third, the Manat? 20 "What! For you the males and for Him the females?" 21 This indeed is an unjust division! 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. And now the guidance from their Lord hath come unto them. 23 Or shall man have what he wishes? 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
