The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I swear by the star when it goes down. 1 Your companion hath not gone astray, nor hath he erred. 2 nor does he speak out of desire. 3 It is but a revelation revealed. 4 and taught to him 5 by the great mighty one (Gabriel), 6 And reached the highest pinnacle. 7 Then he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] approached and came closer, 8 until he was two bow-lengths away or even closer 9 When He revealed to His votary what He revealed. 10 His heart did not falsify what he perceived. 11 Will ye therefore dispute with him concerning that which he hath seen? 12 And indeed, he saw him a second time 13 Near Sidrat-ul-Muntaha [lote-tree of the utmost boundary (beyond which none can pass)], 14 Near which is the garden, the place to be resorted to. 15 (This was) when the lote-tree was covered with that which covered it. 16 [And withal,] the eye did not waver, nor yet did it stray: 17 Indeed, he saw one of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have ye then considered Al-Lat and AL-'uzza: 19 and Manat the third, the other? 20 Are there sons for you, and daughters for Him? 21 That is indeed an unfair division! 22 They are but names which you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord! 23 Can ever man get what he desires? 24 But it is to God that the Hereafter and this world belong. 25
