The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the setting star, 1 That your companion is not confused, nor has he gone astray, 2 Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. 3 that [which he conveys to you] is but [a divine] inspiration with which he is being inspired 4 taught him by one terrible in power, 5 [an angel] endowed with surpassing power, who in time manifested himself in his true shape and nature, 6 When he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 then drew near and suspended hung, 8 until he was two bows' length away, or nearer. 9 then revealed to his servant that he revealed. 10 His heart did not falsify what he perceived. 11 will you, then, contend with him as to what he saw? 12 And indeed, he saw him a second time 13 At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary - 14 Near it is the Garden of Refuge - 15 when the lote tree was covered in mystic splendour. 16 His eye did not waver, nor did it stray, 17 for indeed he saw one of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 HAVE YOU, then, ever considered [what you are worshipping in] Al-Lat and Al-Uzza, 19 And Manat the other third? 20 What! for you the males and for Him the females! 21 Then that is surely a very unjust distribution! 22 These are nothing but names that you and your forefathers have invented, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They are merely following their conjectures and their carnal desires although guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Or shall man have what he wishes? 24 Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 25
