The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the setting star, 1 Your companion does not err, nor does he go astray; 2 nor does he speak out of desire. 3 It is naught save an inspiration that is inspired, 4 Bestowed on him by the Supreme Intellect, 5 Of might, he (Gabriel) stood firm 6 While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon. 7 Then he approached and descended 8 So he was the measure of two bows or closer still. 9 And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed. 10 The heart [of the Prophet] did not misconstrue what he saw. 11 So will you dispute with him over what he saw? 12 And indeed, he saw him a second time 13 Near the Lote-tree beyond which none may pass: 14 nigh which is the Garden of the Refuge, 15 When that covered the lote-tree which covered it. 16 The sight turned not aside, nor it exceeded. 17 and he certainly saw some of the greatest Signs of His Lord. 18 Have you considered Lat and 'Uzza, 19 And Manat the other third? 20 Do sons belong to you and daughters to God? 21 That is indeed an unjust division. 22 They are but names which you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord! 23 Or shall man have what he coveteth? 24 Nay! for Allah is the hereafter and the former (life). 25
