The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the setting star, 1 Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred, 2 Nor does he speak out of desire. 3 This is naught but a revelation revealed, 4 The Lord of Mighty Power has taught him, 5 and endowed with wisdom; who in time manifested himself; 6 standing poised at the highest point on the horizon, 7 Then he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] approached and came closer, 8 Till he was two bows length off or yet nearer. 9 And thus did [God] reveal unto His servant whatever He deemed right to reveal. 10 The heart lied not (in seeing) what it saw. 11 Will you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 For indeed he saw him at a second descent, 13 by the Lote-Tree of the Boundary 14 Close to which is the Everlasting Paradise. 15 When that covered the lote-tree which covered it. 16 The eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold. 17 For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest! 18 (Among the idols) have you considered allat and al'uzza, 19 And subsequently the third, the Manat? 20 Do sons belong to you and daughters to God? 21 that, lo and behold, is an unfair division! 22 They are naught but names yourselves have named, and your fathers; God has sent down no authority touching them. They follow only surmise, and what the souls desire; and yet guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Shall man have whatever he craves? 24 Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 25
