The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the star when it setteth. 1 Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred, 2 Nor does he speak out of desire. 3 It is not but a revelation revealed, 4 taught him by one terrible in power, 5 and endowed with wisdom; who in time manifested himself; 6 standing poised at the highest point on the horizon, 7 then drew near and suspended hung, 8 Until a space of two bow (arcs) or even less remained, 9 And thus did [God] reveal unto His servant whatever He deemed right to reveal. 10 The (Prophet's) (mind and) heart in no way falsified that which he saw. 11 Will you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 He saw Him indeed another time 13 to the Lot-tree (in the seven heavens) 14 nigh which is the Garden of the Refuge, 15 with the lote-tree veiled in a veil of nameless splendour 16 The eye did not turn aside, nor did it exceed the limit. 17 Indeed he saw the supreme signs of his Lord. 18 (Among the idols) have you considered allat and al'uzza, 19 and the third one, Manat? -- 20 Are yours the males and His the females? 21 Behold, such would be indeed a division most unfair! 22 They are naught but names yourselves have named, and your fathers; God has sent down no authority touching them. They follow only surmise, and what the souls desire; and yet guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Can ever man get what he desires? 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
