The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the setting star, 1 Your companion did not err, nor did he go astray. 2 He does not speak out of his own desires. 3 that [which he conveys to you] is but [a divine] inspiration with which he is being inspired 4 Bestowed on him by the Supreme Intellect, 5 by the great mighty one (Gabriel), 6 being on the higher horizon. 7 He (Gabriel) then came nearer and nearer. 8 Till he was two bows length off or yet nearer. 9 So did (Allah) convey the inspiration to His Servant- (conveyed) what He (meant) to convey. 10 His heart added no untruth to what he saw. 11 Are you, then, going to contend with him regarding what he sees with his eyes? 12 Indeed he saw him a second time, 13 to the Lot-tree (in the seven heavens) 14 Near which is the garden, the place to be resorted to. 15 when the lote tree was covered in mystic splendour. 16 The sight did not shift, nor did it cross the limits. 17 He saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 (Can anything as such be considered true) of al-Lat, al-Uzza, 19 And subsequently the third, the Manat? 20 What! for you the male sex, and for Him, the female? 21 That indeed were an unfair division! 22 These are only names given by yourselves and your fathers. God has not given them any authority. They, (unbelievers), only follow mere conjecture and the desires of their souls, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord. 23 What! Will man get whatever he dreams of? 24 Nay! for Allah is the hereafter and the former (life). 25
