The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By oath of the beloved shining star Mohammed (peace and blessings be upon him), when he returned from the Ascent. 1 This fellow-man of yours has not gone astray, nor is he deluded, 2 He does not speak out of his own desires. 3 It is only an Inspiration that is inspired. 4 taught by One who is Stern in power. 5 Of might, he (Gabriel) stood firm 6 And he is in the highest part of the horizon. 7 Then he drew nigh and came down 8 And was at a distance of two bows' length or (even) nearer, 9 Thus He revealed unto His bondman whatsoever He revealed. 10 The heart lied not (in seeing) what it saw. 11 What! So do you dispute with him regarding what he saw? 12 And indeed he did see the Spectacle again. 13 by the Lote-Tree of the Boundary 14 near unto the garden of promise. 15 When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it]. 16 His sight did not waver nor was it unduly bold. 17 He certainly saw the greatest (signs) of the existence of his Lord. 18 Have you really considered al-Lat and al-"Uzza, 19 and, another, the third manat? 20 Are yours the males and His the females? 21 This indeed is an unjust division! 22 They are not but [mere] names you have named them - you and your forefathers - for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance. 23 Does man imagine that whatever he wishes for is right for him? 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
