The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
By the Star when it goes down,- 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he misguided, 2 nor speaks he out of caprice. 3 This is naught but a revelation revealed, 4 and taught to him 5 One strong of make. Then he stood straight. 6 While he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] was in the highest part of the horizon, 7 Thereafter he drew nigh, then he let himself down. 8 two bows' length away, or nearer, 9 And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed. 10 His (Muhammad's) heart did not lie to him about what his eyes had seen. 11 will you, then, contend with him as to what he saw? 12 And certainly he saw him in another descent, 13 to the Lot-tree (in the seven heavens) 14 near which is the Garden of Abode. 15 When that which shroudeth did enshroud the lote-tree, 16 The eye did not turn aside, nor did it exceed the limit. 17 Assuredly he beheld of the sign of his Lord, the greatest. 18 Have you considered El-Lat and El-'Uzza 19 and Manat the third, the other? 20 Shall you have the male issues, and He the female issues? 21 That indeed is a division unfair! 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath sent down no authority. They follow but their fancy, and that which pleaseth their souls; whereas assuredly there hath come unto them from their Lord the guidance. 23 Can ever man get what he desires? 24 Allah's is the last and the first. 25
