The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By oath of the beloved shining star Mohammed (peace and blessings be upon him), when he returned from the Ascent. 1 your companion is not in error nor has he gone astray. 2 Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. 3 It is naught but revelation that is revealed, 4 He was taught by one Mighty in Power, 5 One vigorous; and he grew clear to view 6 standing poised at the highest point on the horizon, 7 Then the Spectacle became closer, and came down in full view. 8 Until a space of two bow (arcs) or even less remained, 9 and revealed to God's servant what he revealed. 10 The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) 11 what, will you dispute with him what he sees? 12 And indeed he did see the Spectacle again. 13 to the Lot-tree (in the seven heavens) 14 Near it is the Garden of Abode. 15 When the tree was covered with a covering, 16 (Muhammad's) eyes did not deceive him, nor did they lead him to falsehood. 17 truly did he see some of the most profound of his Sustainer's symbols. 18 (Can anything as such be considered true) of al-Lat, al-Uzza, 19 And Manat, the other third (of the pagan deities)? 20 Is the male for you and for Him the female? 21 That indeed is a division most unfair! 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath sent down no authority. They follow but their fancy, and that which pleaseth their souls; whereas assuredly there hath come unto them from their Lord the guidance. 23 Or shall man have what he wishes? 24 But it is to God that the Hereafter and this world belong. 25
