The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the star when it sets: 1 your comrade is not astray, neither errs, 2 nor does he speak out of his own desire. 3 that [which he conveys to you] is but [a divine] inspiration with which he is being inspired 4 The Lord of Mighty Power has taught him, 5 Of might, he (Gabriel) stood firm 6 While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon. 7 and then drew near, and came close, 8 And was at a distance of two bows' length or (even) nearer, 9 So Allah divinely revealed to His bondman, whatever He divinely revealed. 10 The heart lied not (in seeing) what it saw. 11 So will you dispute with him over what he saw? 12 Indeed he saw him a second time, 13 Near Sidrat-ul-Muntaha [lote-tree of the utmost boundary (beyond which none can pass)], 14 Near which is the garden, the place to be resorted to. 15 with the lote-tree veiled in a veil of nameless splendour 16 The sight turned not aside, nor it exceeded. 17 He certainly saw the greatest (signs) of the existence of his Lord. 18 So did you observe the idols Lat and Uzza? 19 And Manat the other third? 20 What! for you the males and for Him the females! 21 That indeed were an unfair division! 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath sent down no authority. They follow but their fancy, and that which pleaseth their souls; whereas assuredly there hath come unto them from their Lord the guidance. 23 Can the human being have whatever he wishes? 24 But it is to God that the Hereafter and this world belong. 25
